Mother nature is a fickle mistress. Coming off a winter with temperatures in the seventies and now in the midst of a summer that seems to vacillate between simple summer sun, swirling storms, and cool evenings, it can be tough to dress in a way that ensures comfort throughout the day.

You’ll see stars of all types rocking the down vest with a ton of different looks, whether it’s Oscar Isaac during a shoot for GQ or Jordana Brewster taking a stroll with her kid. Most notably, activist DeRay McKesson made his blue Patagonia down vest a part of his uniform as he traveled from city to city for different demonstrations. His vest-wearing was so prolific that it earned its own Twitter account.

The reason for the rise of the down vest is pretty self-evident: it’s the perfect addition to a casual look on cool summer evenings, and a great layer to have when prepping for the harsher seasons.
