The ugly shoe trend has reached new heights, quite literally, at Milan Fashion Week. On Sunday, models walked the runway for Dsquared2's Spring/Summer 2019 show wearing what looked like a hybrid of dad sneakers and wedges.

The chunky heels feature thick ankle and toe straps with black plastic buckles, like the ones you'd find on a bike helmet, and come in various shades of bright pink, orange, blue, green, yellow and red. In place of a standard wedge, the shoes have thick white soles divided into two parts — one flat against the ground, one elevated at an angle — by a rounded cutout.

Naturally, the eye-catching creation, which the luxury fashion house described as "fluorescent trimmed sandals" in an Instagram post, quickly made the rounds online, leaving some rather perplexed.

As Teen Vogue spotted, after Who What Wear UK tweeted a photo of Dsquared2's sandals on Monday, some Twitter users compared the wedges to characters and action figures from various TV shows like "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" or "Power Rangers."

Many were simply not having it. A few even called the sandals the ugliest shoe of the year.

But the wedges managed to capture some hearts along the way, as several people gushed over Dsquared's design.

And given how much stars like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner seem to love the ugly shoe trend, we wouldn't be surprised if they got their hands on a pair of these dad sneaker wedges tomorrow.

Dsquared2 did not immediately respond to INSIDER's request for comment.
